How Levels Match Grades

Grade is a guide. The right starting level depends on your child's current reading and writing skills.

Breakthrough stage levels. L7 CCSS Grade 2, Lexile 530L–650L, AR 3.0–3.5 — builds stamina for longer chapter books, retells key events, makes simple predictions, uses context clues. L8 CCSS Grade 3, Lexile 620L–820L, AR 3.6–4.2 — understands character feelings, cause and effect, theme, and basic story structure. L9 CCSS Grade 4, Lexile 740L–1030L, AR 4.3–4.9 — analyzes point of view, character motivation, conflict and theme, uses textual evidence. L10 CCSS Grades 5–6, Lexile 830L–1070L, AR 5.0–7.0 — communicates fluently and understands detailed written texts. CEFR B1 to B2.
